In 742 AD, during the Tang Dynasty, the Great Mosque of Xi’ An was constructed by Muslims who had immigrated to China and required a place to worship. These Muslims were missionaries from the Middle East who had traveled along the Silk Road to the capital of China. They settled down and spread their religion to the people of Xi’ An, who built the mosque as a place of worship for the converts of Islam. The Great Mosque had many of it’s buildings built in later years than the original mosque, like during the Ming and Qing Dynasties. The mosque is used as a place of worship for muslims living in Xi’ An, but it has none of the attributes that define a mosque in the Middle East. This mosque has a completely Chinese design and structure as it was built by the Chinese Muslim converts. Newer buildings were added to accommodate the rising number of Chinese Muslims in the area in order for them to have a proper place for worship. Don’t worry, you can still go in even if you aren’t a Muslim. A visit through the magnificent 130,000 square meter property of the Great Mosque will surely make you feel as if you are in paradise.
