Built during the Eastern Han Dynasty, this pagoda is located in the city of Xi’ An. A symbol of Buddhism in the city, this building was originally built to be a shrine to the Buddha. The emperor at the time of Eastern Han was a believer in Buddhism and when the Buddha died he had the body transferred to Xi’ An. However, later in the Zhou Dynasty the emperor disliked Buddhism and demolished many Buddhist establishments including the Famen Temple. The demolition led to the destruction of most of the Buddha’s body, except for a sliver of his finger bone. After the creation of the Sui Dynasty, a flood of pro-Buddhism swept through China, and Buddhism became a well respected religion. The Famen Temple was rebuilt during this era with bricks, rather than the original wooden structure. Now, the Buddha’s remaining finger bone is kept securely in the temple. This temple will impress you beyond measure. Such a great presentation of Buddhist history and close to many other religious sites, the Famen Temple is definitely a good place to go.
