This artificial reservoir was built around the 1600’s, in the city of Bukhara, where synagogues are still standing today. When it was founded, Judaism wasn’t the dominant religion in the area, and they faced persecution from the local Muslims. Even today, the synagogues are still used by Jewish members of the city of Bukhara. The original Jews of Bukhara were supposed descendants Israelites who were imprisoned in Assyria. They were the forefathers of Judaism in Bukhara, and created a small community of whom the modern Bukharan Jews are all descendants. The synagogue at Lyab-i Hauz is still functioning today as the meeting of Jews, and the reason it hasn’t been torn down by Muslims is that the Jewish population is quite high. The Jewish influence in Bukhara is strong enough to have gained a foothold among the large population of Muslims in the area, to the point where they have land to build synagogues next to the mosques. No need to reconsider, the Lyab-i Hauz is a beautiful sight to see. There is no doubt that your life will change after seeing the perseverance of this group of Jews, and maybe you will endure through the troubles of your own life. So sign up now for a life changing trip to Bukhara.
