In the city of Xi’ An, formerly known as Chang An, this Christian Nestorian pagoda stands as one of the earliest churches in China. Built during the early 7th century, Christianity and many other religions were pouring into China during the period of acceptance of foreign cultures. It was popular during it’s time of creation, because it was like a church for the Christians of the area, and was a symbol of Western influence in China. At the time, Xi’ An was an international city, many Christians had come to the major city to spread religious influences. A small faction of Nestorian Christians settled in the area of Zhouzhi. These men were the forefathers of the Da Qin Pagoda, as the original building was hand-made using mud and plaster. Even today, there is still a group of Nestorian Christians living among the people of Zhouzhi and carry on the tradition of their ancestors. The pagoda was abandoned in 845 AD, when many Christians were faced with persecution by the wave of Taoism spreading rapidly around China. However, it was later used as a Buddhist temple until an earthquake destroyed most of the pagoda in 1556. Many underground rooms and chambers were sealed shut by the earthquake, which led to the loss valuable artifacts. Through it all, the Chinese government rebuilt most of the pagoda exterior in 1999 and brought this precious relic back to its former glory. This tour will blow your mind.
