Located in the Mutou Valley under the magnificent Flaming Mountain, these caves have endured for over 1500 years. Carved into the mountain between 5th century A.D. and the 14th century, there are 77 caves located among the many caves. All of these caves were decorated with murals of Buddha. The Bezeklik Caves were made during a time of widespread acceptance of Buddhism among the Chinese people. The reason people were influenced by Buddhism was because the Tang Dynasty had opened China to foreign influences. Many people converted to the beliefs of Buddhism, and the caves recorded the gatherings of Buddhists from different ethnical backgrounds. However, near the end of the Tang Dynasty in the 9th century, many foreign religions were banned to help support Taoism. During this time, many Buddhist temples and relics were destroyed, and the Bezeklik Caves were desecrated too. That is why the paintings and sculptures we see today aren’t in such good condition. Many paintings and carvings appear like they have been worn away by the weather, when in fact it is the work of anti-Buddhist vandals trying to root out Buddhism in China. In 67 CE, two Buddhist monks, Moton and Chufarlan, who were taken to the palace after the emperor dreamed of something he thought to be the Buddha. The emperor converted to Buddhism and Buddhist teachings began to spread through the Chinese provinces through the imperial power. This destination is definitely a sight for sore eyes.
